A violent clash between rival fans after a Genoa derby left nearly 40 people injured, including 26 police officers, at a local hospital. Fans engaged in pre-match skirmishes on a city bridge and outside the stadium before Sampdoria beat Genoa in a penalty shootout in the Italian Cup.
Former Juventus and Italy star Andrea Pirlo has been dismissed as manager of Sampdoria after a disappointing start to the Serie B season. The club, currently second from bottom in the table, opted to make a change following a run of one draw and two losses. Pirlo had previously managed Juventus and their under-23 team.
