Naomi Osaka Breaks Clay-Court Dry Spell, Lands Impressive Win in Madrid

Naomi Osaka claimed her first clay-court victory in two years on Wednesday, overcoming Greet Minnen 6-4, 6-1 at the Mutua Madrid Open. The former world number one’s last triumph on clay came in Madrid in 2022. Despite acknowledging that she isn’t aiming to emulate current top-ranked player Iga Swiatek, Osaka expressed her determination to perform well on the surface. Maria Lourdes Carle recorded her maiden WTA 1000-level victory, defeating 2021 US Open champion Emma Raducanu in straight sets. Other notable victories included Sara Errani’s triumph over former world number one Caroline Wozniacki and Sloane Stephens’ victory in three sets.
