Saskatoon Transit Drivers Face Alarming Violence on Buses

In Saskatoon, transit drivers are experiencing a surge in abuse and violence from passengers. Drivers have reported being kicked, punched, spat on, threatened, and bear-sprayed. The Amalgamated Transit Union Local 615, which represents Saskatoon transit drivers, has expressed concerns about the safety of their members. The union president, Darcy Pederson, emphasized that violence against drivers and passengers is becoming more frequent and severe. The city has acknowledged the issue and is implementing measures to address it, including increased patrolling, safety shields, and a community support officer program.
