Ladakh activist Sonam Wangchuk has commenced a hunger strike after being denied permission to hold a protest in Delhi. The activists are demanding Sixth Schedule status for Ladakh, a move they believe will safeguard the region’s autonomy and cultural identity.
Delhi Chief Minister Atishi was prevented from meeting climate activist Sonam Wangchuk and other Ladakh activists demanding autonomy for the region. Atishi claims she was stopped by Delhi police on orders from the Lieutenant Governor (LG), highlighting a growing conflict over LG rule in both Delhi and Ladakh.
Ladakh, the largest union territory in India, has been divided into seven districts with the creation of five new districts: Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang. The move, welcomed by locals, was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk expressed gratitude for fulfilling the long-standing demand but raised concerns regarding the autonomy of the new districts.
