Spider-Man 2 Re-Release Dominates Box Office, Outperforming New Releases

Despite being released almost two decades ago, Spider-Man 2 made a triumphant return to theaters as part of Sony Pictures’ re-release of the Spider-Man franchise. The film grossed an impressive $805k from 467 locations at the domestic box office on Monday, surpassing newer releases such as Civil War and Abigail. Spider-Man 2’s success is attributed to the nostalgia factor, as audiences flocked to theaters to relive the classic superhero film. Sony’s re-release strategy, which aims to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Columbia Pictures, has proven successful, with the re-released films collectively grossing $1.5 million so far.
