Newport Harbor Beats Mater Dei in CIF-SS Division 1 Playoff Opener

Newport Harbor High School’s boys volleyball team defeated Mater Dei High School in three sets (25-21, 25-20, 25-23) in the first round of the CIF Southern Section (CIF-SS) Division 1 pool play. Despite some early unforced errors, Newport Harbor settled down to secure the victory. Senior Riggs Guy led the Sailors with 18 kills, while setter Grayson Springborn contributed 41 assists. Mater Dei’s Tyler Robinson and Eli McGhee also played well, but Newport Harbor’s strong side-out game and defense proved too much to overcome. Both teams are league champions, with Mater Dei capturing the Trinity League title and Newport Harbor and Corona del Mar sharing the Surf League championship.

20 Years of Surf Fame: Surfers Walk of Fame and South Bay Surf Awards Return to Hermosa Beach

The South Bay Surf Awards will be held on Friday, April 26, at the Hermosa Beach Community Center, showcasing highlights from the winter surf season. Awards for Biggest Wave of the Winter, Ride of the Year, Grom Hardest Charger and Wipeout of the Year will be handed out, with winners selected by a panel of judges. The festivities will end with the Spyder Surf Fest at 1 p.m. on Saturday in the Pier Plaza, where brands will bring out tents, host games and give out free gear.
