South Korea has initiated an investigation into allegations that taxpayers paid for former first lady Kim Jung-sook’s 2018 trip to Agra, India, to visit the Taj Mahal. The investigation was opened six months after a complaint was filed in December 2022, alleging breach of trust, abuse of public funds, and embezzlement. Former President Moon Jae-in defended the trip, claiming it was a diplomatic mission, but the opposition People Power Party (PPP) has criticized the explanation, claiming it was a personal trip for Kim. The PPP has called for a special counsel to investigate the matter, while the main opposition Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) has demanded a similar inquiry into the current first lady, Kim Keon-hee, over allegations of receiving a luxury handbag from a Korean-American pastor. The Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission has closed its investigation into Kim Keon-hee, citing lack of legal provisions, but the DPK has criticized the decision.
