Lufthansa Eyes 19.9% Stake in TAP as Portugal Privatizes Airline

Deutsche Lufthansa AG is reportedly planning to acquire a 19.9% stake in Portugal’s state-owned airline, TAP SA, as part of its privatization. The move, valued between €180 million and €200 million, aims to strengthen Lufthansa’s position in the lucrative transatlantic market, particularly in Brazil, where TAP holds a dominant presence. The acquisition will face competition from Air France-KLM and IAG SA, who have also expressed interest in TAP. The privatization of TAP is expected to be finalized in the first quarter of 2025.
