Former Liverpool Star John Barnes Banned as Company Director for Three-and-a-Half Years for Tax Avoidance

John Barnes, the former Liverpool star, has been banned as a company director for three-and-a-half years after his media firm, John Barnes Media Limited, failed to pay £190,000 in VAT and corporation tax. The investigation by the Insolvency Service revealed that the company failed to pay £78,839 in corporation tax and £115,272 in VAT, despite having a turnover of £441,798 during the period in question. Barnes, who was England’s most-capped player at the time of his retirement, formed John Barnes Media Limited in 2012 and was its sole director. The ban prevents Barnes from being involved in the promotion, formation, or management of a company without court permission.
