WA News: Jail for Cash Courier, Hancock Kids Lose Legal Bid, Teachers Strike, McRae Backed by Council

Nathan Ferguson, a long-haul truck driver, has been sentenced to three years and three months in prison for transporting $13 million in cash during the COVID-19 pandemic. The money was discovered in a water tank and sports bag in Ferguson’s truck. In a separate case, the WA Supreme Court has ruled against John Hancock and Bianca Rinehart, the eldest children of Gina Rinehart, in their bid for legally sensitive files. The court found that the files should remain top secret. Meanwhile, thousands of teachers in East Perth have gone on strike for the first time in over a decade, demanding better wages and conditions. The strike is the result of an “insulting” wage deal from the state government. In other news, a no-confidence motion against Pilbara councillor Adrian McRae, who praised Russia’s elections, has failed. McRae was backed by six out of nine councillors. Finally, Indigenous Australians Minister Linda Burney has expressed concern over the death of a 10-year-old Indigenous boy who took his own life while in state care in Western Australia.
