India Plans to Reintroduce Laptop, Tablet Import Restrictions: A Push for Local Tech Manufacturing

India is considering re-imposing restrictions on the import of laptops, tablets, and PCs in a bid to boost domestic tech manufacturing. This move aims to encourage companies like Apple and Samsung to increase production within the country. While similar restrictions were proposed last year but withdrawn due to industry backlash, the government believes enough time has passed for companies to adjust. The new rules, which could take effect after January 2025, will require prior approval for all imports and aim to reduce reliance on foreign technology.
