Akhilesh Yadav to Contest from Kannauj, Makes Surprise Reversal

The Samajwadi Party has announced that Akhilesh Yadav will run for the Kannauj Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh. This is a reversal from the party’s earlier decision to field Tej Pratap Yadav in the constituency. Akhilesh Yadav has won the Kannauj seat three times in the past and his wife, Dimple Yadav, also won the seat in 2012 and 2014. Sources within the party have said that there was discontent among Samajwadi Party cadres regarding Tej Pratap’s candidature, with many expressing a preference for the party chief to contest the seat himself.

Samajwadi Party Declares Akhilesh Yadav as Kannauj Lok Sabha Candidate

Samajwadi Party leader Ram Gopal Yadav has declared that Akhilesh Yadav, the party’s national president, will file his nomination from the Kannauj Lok Sabha seat on Thursday, March 2. This announcement comes after the party initially named Tej Pratap Yadav, Akhilesh’s nephew, as its candidate for Kannauj. Ram Gopal Yadav stated that there is no confusion about Akhilesh Yadav’s candidacy from the seat. The Lok Sabha seat was a Samajwadi Party stronghold until BJP’s Subrat Pathak won in 2019. Akhilesh Yadav has expressed confidence in his party’s victory in the upcoming elections.
