Rewriting Joy: How Fear Can Hold Us Captive

Joy, despite its vulnerable nature, is essential for embracing life’s possibilities. After experiencing pain or trauma, we often adopt pessimism or cynicism as shields against further hurt. However, these defenses prevent us from fully experiencing the present and holding hope for the future. Gratitude and thanksgiving, when expressed outwardly, can double our joy and remind us of God’s faithfulness. Hope, while acknowledging the pain of the past, trusts in God’s promises and envisions a brighter future. By asking ourselves, “What if it’s wonderful?” we open ourselves up to the possibility of God’s grace and the beauty that life has to offer.
