The 2024 Met Gala, themed “The Garden of Time,” provided an opportunity to spotlight contemporary Indigenous design and the artistry of Jamie Okuma. Okuma, a renowned fashion designer and beadwork artist, created a custom floral evening suit for the journalist, incorporating traditional Ojibwe motifs and techniques. The ensemble included a silk-twill blazer adorned with hand-appliquéd photographs of flowers from both the journalist’s home region and Okuma’s reservation. The trousers drew inspiration from traditional Indigenous breechclothes, featuring an asymmetrical panel adorned with crystals and ribbons. Okuma also restored an antique beaded bag, adding new straps to create a bandolier look. The entire ensemble celebrated the theme of “reawakening,” showcasing the vitality and innovation of contemporary Native American design.

The Met Gala 2024 left plenty of room for sartorial interpretation, with the exhibit ‘Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion’ inviting guests to reconsider how we can engage with clothing too old to wear again. The dress code, ”, referenced J.G. Ballard’s short story, providing guests with multiple avenues for exploration. Attendees showcased a range of abstract and literal takes on the theme, with some channeling ephemeral concepts and others showcasing intricate design work.
