Thunder Bay Finnish Canadian Historical Society Celebrates 50 Years and Mourns Loss of Finnish Labour Temple

The Thunder Bay Finnish Canadian Historical Society (TBFCHS) is commemorating its 50th anniversary with a free public event on Saturday at the Thunder Bay Museum. The event will include presentations reflecting on the collective trauma following the loss of the Finnish Labour Temple in December 2021, as well as the unveiling of materials from a nearly 113-year-old time capsule recovered from the building’s cornerstone. The TBFCHS hopes to increase membership and activity, and expand its public access to historical collections online.

Time Capsule from the Roaring ’20s Unearthed in Minnesota High School Demolition

A construction crew and a school employee recently discovered a time capsule from the 1920s during the demolition of an old high school in Mankato, Minnesota. The capsule, which was opened on Monday, contained various historical artifacts such as newspapers, financial statements, organizational rosters, and coins. The discovery of the well-preserved capsule has excited the community, providing a glimpse into the local history of the era. The artifacts will be preserved and shared by the Steele County Historical Society in partnership with the school district’s museum.
