Toyota’s New Hybrid Powertrain Boosts Tacoma’s Off-Road Prowess

The Toyota Tacoma is gaining a new high-powered hybrid powertrain, the 2.4-liter i-Force Max, which delivers 326 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. This hybrid engine pairs a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with a 48-hp electric motor and a 1.87-kWh battery, providing impressive torque at a low rpm and an EPA-estimated 24 miles per gallon combined. Additionally, the Tacoma offers various off-road features such as a disconnecting stabilizer bar, off-road cameras, and Bilstein remote reservoir shocks. The i-Force Max Limited grade features a full-time four-wheel-drive system with a center locking differential, while the Tacoma TRD and Trailhunter versions have part-time four-wheel drive and a two-speed transfer case. The i-Force Max Tacoma starts at $46,300, positioning it above the base price of $31,500 but offering enhanced performance and off-road capabilities.
