After being discovered in 2015 and remaining underwater due to ownership disputes, the San José galleon, a Spanish treasure ship sunk in 1708, is finally being recovered by Colombian officials. Estimated to hold €18 billion in treasure, the galleon’s ownership has been contested by Spain, the US salvage company Sea Search Armada, and Bolivian Indigenous communities. Now, a $4.5 million recovery process has begun, starting with a characterization phase to inventory the archaeological material on the seabed.
