The Penn Hills Shade Tree Commission will host an Arbor Day celebration from 2 to 4 p.m. on May 4th in Universal Park. The event will feature a tree planting ceremony, crafts for children, native tree seedling giveaways, and more. The Shade Tree Commission is celebrating the municipality’s fifth year as a Tree City USA, a designation for communities committed to growing and maintaining their tree canopies.

The cities of Grandville and Wyoming, located near Grand Rapids, Michigan, will commemorate Arbor Day this Friday by planting trees in their communities. Arbor Day is observed annually on the last Friday of April and has been a recognized national holiday since 1970, following President Richard Nixon’s proclamation. Its inception dates back to 1907 when President Theodore Roosevelt encouraged schoolchildren to participate in tree planting activities.

West Penn Power volunteers planted 256 trees at Hempfield Park on Earth Day and distributed free trees in Jeannette last Friday. The efforts are part of parent company FirstEnergy’s initiative to plant trees in its service area, with plans to plant 25,000 additional trees this year.
