The Delhi High Court has issued a notice to the Delhi Police seeking a response on Umar Khalid’s bail plea in the UAPA case. The court has scheduled the hearing for August 29. Khalid has been in custody since September 2020 and his previous bail applications have been rejected by the trial court.

Delhi High Court judge Amit Sharma recused himself from hearing former JNU student Umar Khalid’s bail plea in the Delhi riots conspiracy case. The hearing has been postponed to July 24, when the court will hear bail pleas by other co-accused.
A Kashmiri MP has condemned the use of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) against youth who raised pro-Palestine slogans during a Muharram procession in Srinagar. He argued that India’s long-standing policy of supporting a two-state solution in Palestine makes the charges against the youth illogical and points to a discriminatory application of the law.
Sharjeel Imam has been granted bail by the Delhi High Court in connection with the 2020 riots case, in which he was accused of sedition. Imam, who was arrested under sedition charges and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) for allegedly giving provocative speeches in Delhi’s Jamia area and Aligarh Muslim University, will, however, remain in jail due to other charges in the Delhi riots conspiracy case.
The Supreme Court of India has ordered the release of NewsClick founder and editor Prabir Purkayastha, who was arrested under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). The apex court held that Purkayastha’s arrest and remand were illegal. The Delhi Police had arrested Purkayastha in a case under the UAPA, alleging that NewsClick received foreign funds in violation of the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA). The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) subsequently filed a case against NewsClick for breaching the FCRA.
A Delhi court on Tuesday took cognizance of a charge sheet filed under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) against Prabir Purkayastha, the founder and Editor-in-Chief of news portal NewsClick. The charge sheet alleges that NewsClick received funds for pro-China content. The court ordered arguments on framing of charges in the matter on May 31.
