Food Waste in the UK: A Tragedy and a Waste of Money

Food waste is a major problem in the UK, with 8.4 million people experiencing food poverty and 9.5 million tonnes of food binned every year. Several UK supermarkets are working to reduce food waste. Aldi offers “Too Good To Waste” boxes of slightly damaged produce, Lidl has launched “Too Good To Go” bags of unsold food, Waitrose redistributes food through charitable partners and Olio, Sainsbury’s offers “Taste me, Don’t waste me” boxes of surplus produce, M&S donates surplus food to the local community, Tesco prevents waste using the WRAP hierarchy, Asda donates surplus food to FareShare and animal feed, and Morrisons sells “Magic Bags” and works with community groups to reduce waste.
