Meta and Universal Music Group Extend Partnership, Addressing AI Concerns

Meta Platforms Inc. and Universal Music Group have renewed their multi-year agreement, expanding Meta’s rights to utilize UMG artists across its platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Meta Quest, and now WhatsApp. This agreement comes amidst concerns regarding the use of music in AI development, with UMG previously withdrawing its catalog from TikTok over copyright concerns. The renewed partnership emphasizes collaboration to address unauthorized AI-generated content and protect artists’ rights.

TikTok and UMG Strike New Content Deal, Restoring Access to Hit Music

TikTok users can once again create music clips using tracks from Universal Music Group’s (UMG) vast catalog, including music from Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, and Ariana Grande. This follows a new licensing agreement between the social media platform and UMG, resolving months of tension. The deal comes at a crucial time for TikTok, facing threats of bans in key markets like the US. This win with UMG not only bolsters its music content but also enhances its appeal to users. The UMG catalog will be available for video creation within one to two weeks, reviving existing videos using UMG music that had been muted.
