Despite advancements in technology and the judiciary’s commitment to providing access to justice, Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud has expressed concern over the reluctance of some State High Courts to fully embrace video conferencing (VC) hearings. The Chief Justice acknowledged that High Courts have received significant funding for infrastructure upgrades, emphasizing the need for enhanced VC capabilities in district courts, jails, and medical institutions to reduce delays in criminal trials. The Supreme Court has also launched a WhatsApp Messenger service for automated updates on causelists and electronic filings. The judiciary’s ongoing digitization efforts include a migration to the ‘Meghraj Cloud 2.0’ infrastructure, ensuring data security and accessibility for all courts.
