India’s Ministry of Earth Sciences is launching a national mission to enhance weather forecasting and develop capabilities to mitigate extreme weather events. The plan involves deploying more observation stations, satellites, and advanced technology like artificial intelligence to improve prediction accuracy and even enable cloud intervention for managing weather conditions.
Results for: Weather Forecasting
India has experienced increased heat wave frequency in recent years, leading to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing heat wave alerts. Despite variations in definitions, the IMD uses specific criteria based on maximum temperature deviations to identify heat waves. Advances in data collection and numerical weather prediction models have significantly improved forecasting accuracy by up to 88% within 24 hours. The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts model has been found to be particularly effective in predicting heat waves in India.
Google has unveiled a groundbreaking artificial intelligence (AI) model called SEEDS (Scalable Ensemble Envelope Diffusion Sampler) designed to revolutionize weather forecasting. This AI model, inspired by popular language models like ChatGPT and Midjourney, leverages AI’s power to generate numerous weather forecasts swiftly, enabling researchers to analyze a wider spectrum of potential outcomes.
