IBM and NASA Release Open-Source AI Model for Weather and Climate Insights

IBM and NASA have collaborated to develop a new open-source AI foundation model for weather and climate applications. This model, dubbed ‘Prithvi WxC’, can be used for various purposes, including targeted forecasting, severe weather prediction, and improving climate model resolution. The model is flexible and can be fine-tuned for specific applications, making it a valuable tool for scientists, developers, and businesses.

Heavy Rainfall Expected Across India as Monsoon Withdrawal Begins

India is bracing for widespread heavy rainfall from Sunday to Thursday, driven by a developing low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal and the delayed withdrawal of the southwest monsoon. While the monsoon is expected to start receding from west Rajasthan and Kachchh on Monday, the late withdrawal could pose challenges for maturing crops and rabi sowing. Despite a dry start, India has received abundant rainfall this year, aiding kharif crop sowing after last year’s low production. However, the excess rainfall in September could threaten the upcoming harvest and potentially impact inflation.

New Zealand-Afghanistan Test Abandoned on Day 1 Due to Wet Outfield

The highly anticipated inaugural Test match between New Zealand and Afghanistan in Greater Noida was abandoned on the opening day due to a wet outfield. Despite repeated inspections, the ground remained unfit for play due to persistent dampness caused by heavy rainfall in the preceding week. The lack of a modern drainage system further aggravated the situation. With rain forecast throughout the week, the future of the Test match remains uncertain.
