A female gray whale, measuring approximately 40 feet in length, washed up on a beach in Alameda on Saturday night, marking the first whale death reported in the San Francisco Bay Area this year. The whale initially floated off the coast of Robert W. Crown Memorial State Beach but was later found floating freely with the tide. Cal Academy, which initially reported the whale, collected blubber samples and measurements via boat. A necropsy will be conducted at Angel Island State Park to determine the cause of death.
