Dead Gray Whale Towed to Angel Island for Examination

A 40-foot long gray whale was towed to Angel Island by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on Monday for examination by biologists. The whale washed up near Crown Beach in Alameda over the weekend and was located by the corps of engineers on Monday morning. The Marine Mammal Center says the whale was an adult female, and the official cause of death is still unknown. Scientists believe the whale’s migration patterns may be changing as they are staying longer off the coast of the Bay Area due to the abundance of food.
