In a major victory for animal welfare, 31 macaque monkeys have been rescued from a notorious training center in Indonesia, ending their lives of suffering as ‘dancing monkeys’. The rescued monkeys, taken from the wild at a young age, were forced to endure cruel training regimes involving starvation, beatings, and chaining, ultimately ending up performing for tourists and shoppers in the streets. This rescue, led by Jakarta Animal Aid Network (JAAN) with the support of World Animal Protection, signifies a crucial step towards ending the exploitative practice of dancing monkeys in Indonesia. The monkeys are now undergoing rehabilitation and are on their way to a life free from cruelty.
