Jean-Francois Alain, a 49-year-old father and avid triathlete, died during the swim leg of a half Ironman triathlon in Galveston, Texas. His widow, Veronique Tremblay, says witness accounts indicate there may have been a delay in getting help to Alain, who raised his hand to signal for assistance. Event organizers did not respond to an interview request, and an autopsy has been completed but results won’t be available for several months. Dr. Richard Gold, an anesthesiologist from Duke University, said deaths during swimming portions of triathlons are rare and may be caused by swimming induced pulmonary oedema (SIPE), where the lungs fill up with fluid from inside the body.
