Takeru Satoh on Embracing the Challenge of ‘Like a Dragon: Beyond the Game’ and His Personal Journey

## Takeru Satoh on Embracing the Challenge of ‘Like a Dragon: Beyond the Game’ and His Personal Journey

Actor Takeru Satoh, known for his roles in popular films and dramas like ‘Rurouni Kenshin’ and ‘The Princess Blade,’ takes on a new challenge as Kazuma Kiryu in the Amazon Original drama ‘Like a Dragon: Beyond the Game.’ Based on the popular video game series ‘Yakuza,’ the drama delves into the complex world of a man trying to find his place in a world he no longer recognizes. Satoh sat down with us to discuss the making of the drama, his rigorous training, and the character’s fascinating journey.

Driven by Challenge and a Director’s Trust

When asked about his motivation for taking on this demanding role, Satoh shared, “The chance to work with director Masaharu Take was a key factor. We previously worked together on the film ‘In the Hero’ about a decade ago, though my role was just a few seconds. It meant a lot to me that he remembered me and offered me this opportunity. It’s a challenging role, but I felt it was the perfect time to take on something big, especially turning 30.”

The Rigors of Physical Transformation

Transforming into Kiryu required dedication beyond acting. Satoh explained, “The fighting scenes are crucial to the character, so I sought training to overcome any fear. We built the foundation for Kiryu’s fighting style and then adjusted it to match the script. Alongside my fight trainer, I also worked with a physical trainer for five months. We combined weight training and a strict diet for gradual weight loss.”

Sacrifice for Authenticity

While Satoh claims his training was not overly grueling, he admits to the personal sacrifices he made. “I can’t say it was easy to give up my favorite foods. But, the hardest part was turning down invitations to go out with friends. For me, failing to deliver on the acting front was a far greater burden.”

Embracing the Physicality

He credits the intensive training for his ability to fully embody the character. “The role was built from the ground up, so every scene feels authentic. It’s all thanks to the training.”

A Love for Pushing Boundaries

Satoh’s dedication to his craft is evident. “My priority is for viewers to find the work engaging. So, even if it’s difficult, I just do it. However, personally, I’m not a fan of pushing myself to my limits.”

The Depth of Kazuma Kiryu

When asked about the appeal of Kiryu, Satoh shared his insights into the character’s complexities. “Kiryu is deeply affectionate but struggles to express his feelings. His internal energy grows while his ability to connect with others diminishes. This human fragility, coupled with his fierce devotion, makes him a captivating character.”

The Game’s Influence

Satoh carefully considered the source material, the ‘Yakuza’ video game series, in his portrayal of Kiryu. “I wondered why Kiryu pushed himself to become physically strong. I realized it was a way to compensate for his emotional vulnerability. He also carries a deep-seated lack of parental love. He seeks to fill that void by becoming physically powerful. This background informed my approach to the role.”

Global Ambitions and a Passion for Storytelling

With the drama being distributed globally, Satoh expresses his hopes for international audiences. “While we focused on creating something truly captivating, the energy and passion on set made me believe that it could resonate with viewers worldwide. Japan needs to keep pushing its work onto the world stage. I’m incredibly excited to see the response.”

Inspired by International Cinema

Satoh’s interest in expanding his reach to global audiences stems from his own passion. “I’ve always loved foreign films, so it was a natural progression to consider an international audience.”

Rediscovering a Director’s Vision

His experience working with director Take was a highlight of the production. “I’ve come to admire him even more. He personally auditioned all 400 actors for the drama, which is rare. His dedication creates such a sense of realism that it’s sometimes hard to differentiate between reality and the set. This immersion had a positive impact on the cast’s performances.”

The Power of Contrast

The drama navigates two timelines: 1995 and 2005. Satoh explains his approach to portraying Kiryu in these vastly different periods. “We talked about creating contrast, allowing the 2005 scenes to come alive. We filmed the 2005 scenes after the 1995 scenes, which helped in portraying the energy of youth. The 1995 characters were naive, and their passion, in terms of color, felt warm and bright, like orange, red, and pink. In contrast, the 2005 scenes had a bluer, greyer, darker green palette. I felt Kiryu had to shed that warmth and vibrancy to survive 10 years in prison. He’s trying to reclaim what he lost, but the gap between who he was and who he is now creates a powerful contrast, one I was mindful of in my portrayal.”

Embracing the Present

When asked about his own reflection on the past, Satoh revealed, “I don’t look back. I’m focused on the present.”

A Glimpse into Childhood

He shared a faint memory of his childhood, set in 1995. “I have a hazy recollection of a family trip to visit my grandmother’s siblings in Hawaii.”

Redefining ‘Yakuza’

Satoh’s perspective on the ‘Yakuza’ genre challenges traditional perceptions. “I don’t actually watch a lot of ‘Yakuza’ movies. To me, ‘Like a Dragon’ transcends that genre. It’s not a typical ‘Yakuza’ story.”

Finding Humanity in the Streets

Satoh reveals his favorite aspect of the drama. “Kamurocho, the setting, is a place where a moment’s carelessness can cost you your life. The story revolves around four childhood friends who, despite not being blood-related, struggle to form a real family. Their struggles resonated deeply with me.”

A Transformation Revealed

The most rewarding experience for Satoh during the production was unexpected. “There were moments during filming when it felt like everything was in slow motion. I’m not sure if that’s the right term, but it felt like I was operating on a different time scale than everyone else. I’d experienced that feeling once while playing soccer, but never in acting. It was incredibly fulfilling.”

Satoh’s dedication to his well-being shines through. “In recent years, I’ve focused on my health, doing what I want, eating what I want, and taking care of myself. It’s about prioritising my own needs.”
