Taraji P. Henson Shines in Black Designer Fashion at the 2024 BET Awards

Taraji P. Henson, a beloved actress and advocate for Black excellence, took the stage as host of the BET Awards for the third time. Known for her infectious energy and commitment to celebrating Black culture, Henson embraced the opportunity to showcase the talents of Black designers through her wardrobe.

“I always have the best time hosting the BET Awards,” Henson shared, emphasizing the unique energy of the event. “It’s culture’s biggest night, and the energy from the audience and being surrounded by my fellow peers is always such a thrill.” For Henson, the event is more than just a glamorous gathering; it’s a chance to uplift and celebrate the achievements of Black artists across various fields.

“The opportunity to celebrate and uplift Black excellence in entertainment is truly an honor,” she expressed. “It’s a chance to showcase our community’s incredible talent and achievements on a global stage.”

Henson, a seasoned host, strategically curated her BET Awards wardrobe alongside stylists Wayman Bannerman and Micah McDonald, ensuring every look highlighted Black designers.

“Representation and recognition is vital,” Henson stated. “The BET Awards is our night, and talented Black designers deserve the opportunity to have visibility and the platform they deserve. It’s all about celebrating our heritage, our creativity, and our unique perspectives through the art of fashion.”

The result was a dazzling array of 13 outfits, all created by Black designers. The team, including hair stylist Tym Wallace, makeup artist Saisha Beecham, and nail artist Temeka Jackson, brought each look to life. The evening’s style showcased the work of LaQuan Smith, Sergio Hudson, Off-White, Balmain, Theophilio, Bishme Cromartie, and many more.

“[Taraji] always has a confidence and playful energy to her that allows us to think outside the box, and explore in terms of texture and silhouettes,” McDonald shared, highlighting Henson’s influence on the creative process. “She also really pays attention to detail, so each accessory really feels meaningful.”

Henson’s red carpet entrance was a showstopper in a gold chainlink gown by Balmain’s Olivier Rousteing. “The column gown just felt so sexy and chic,” McDonald described. “We paired it with Tiffany Titan by Pharrell Williams [jewelry,] who is a pioneer for Black culture.”

Other standout looks included a custom Bishme Cromartie denim suit, complete with a fringed denim opera coat. “The inspiration came from ’90s female hip hop icons like Lil Kim and Foxy Brown,” McDonald revealed. The star also graced the night in a metallic LaQuan Smith mini dress and a snakeskin-style dress from Theophilio.

Bannerman added, “We wanted her to feel sexy and spirited, so we loved choosing looks that show skin and explored with colors and texture.”

While her wardrobe was undeniably captivating, Henson’s true highlight of the evening was the entertainment itself. “The entertainment, hands down,” she said, emphasizing the electrifying atmosphere of the event. “The BET Awards always puts on such a fun and electrifying show—and there is never a dull moment.”

Henson’s commitment to showcasing Black talent, coupled with her undeniable style, made the 2024 BET Awards a celebration of Black excellence across all facets of entertainment.
