Tarentum Borough Council has unanimously passed a resolution urging Norfolk Southern to address the growing number of potholes at the Corbet Street rail crossing. The crossing has become increasingly hazardous for vehicles and pedestrians, and the borough is calling on state officials to press for urgent repairs.
Borough Manager Dwight Boddorf described the situation as “terrible” and urged immediate action. Council members emphasized that while they understand the frustration of residents, they cannot make repairs themselves as it is the railroad’s jurisdiction. If repairs were made inappropriately and a train were to derail, it would lead to significant problems.
Norfolk Southern’s senior communications manager, Connor Spielmaker, stated that the company was not aware of the concern at the crossing. However, he assured that they would inspect the site in the coming days to identify any necessary repairs.
To ensure that repairs are forthcoming, council members are lobbying local legislators to press for urgency. Boddorf emphasized that the situation is deteriorating significantly and poses a safety hazard to both vehicles and pedestrians. He stressed that it is Norfolk Southern’s responsibility to address the issue.
