Taste-Testing Nicola Coughlan’s Go-To Chinese Takeaway Order: The Spice Bag

The ongoing debate surrounding Chinese takeaway meals in the UK has sparked curiosity about its Irish counterpart. While Nicola Coughlan, the Irish queen herself, graced Australia with her presence for the Bridgerton in Bowral experience, we seized the opportunity to delve into her Chinese takeaway preferences. According to Coughlan, the ‘Spice Bag,’ a popular Irish takeaway dish, wouldn’t be complete without “a chip shop curry sauce.” In Ireland, Spice Bags are a delightful combination of fries/chips, deep-fried chicken, capsicum/peppers, onions, and a generous sprinkle of salt and chili seasoning. Their distinct flavor is attributed to the Spice Bag seasoning, a tantalizing blend of five spice, paprika, garlic, chili, and onion. Inspired by the Bridgerton lead’s recommendations, our resident food tester and BuzzFeed Australia social producer Zara embarked on a mission to the nearest Irish Chinese takeaway spot in Sydney to put the Spice Bag to the test. Zara ventured to Big Dave’s Chipper in Maroubra, a haven for Irish-style Chinese takeaway in Sydney. She ordered the trusty Spice Bag, accompanied by a side of curry sauce. Starting with the salt and pepper chicken, this particular spot served succulent chicken with a satisfying coating. However, Zara wished for a more generous portion. Overall, she gave the chicken a solid 7/10. Next up were the chips. “I don’t know if I just don’t like the Spice Bag seasoning, but I was not a fan of these,” Zara admitted in her video review. The chips received an average score of 5/10. Coughlan’s must-have Spice Bag element, the curry sauce, was the saving grace according to Zara. It earned a commendable 8/10. After considering all the elements, Zara remained uncertain about the overall appeal of Spice Bags. However, she acknowledged that Nicola Coughlan’s endorsement and her claim that “the hype is real” warrant further exploration of her restaurant recommendations. Zara’s final score for Big Dave’s Chipper: 7/10. Head to BuzzFeed Australia’s Instagram and TikTok to watch Zara’s full review.
