Tate & Lyle, a world leader in ingredient solutions for healthier food and beverages, has taken a significant step towards its ambitious climate goals. The company has signed a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) in North America, marking a major acceleration in its climate action strategy.
This agreement, forged with clean energy leader Enel North America, will see Tate & Lyle receive approximately 256,000 megawatt hours (MWh) of renewable electricity and associated RECs annually from the Ranchland wind farm in Texas. This clean energy will cover the majority of Tate & Lyle’s electricity needs for its North American manufacturing operations, with the exception of its McIntosh, Alabama facility, which is already powered by renewable electricity through a separate agreement with its utility provider.
This PPA, coupled with other renewable initiatives, ensures that 100% of the electricity used by Tate & Lyle’s North American operations will now come from renewable sources. This commitment translates to a remarkable reduction in Tate & Lyle’s global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions: over 80% for Scope 2 emissions and over 25% for Scope 1 and 2 emissions combined, based on a 2019 baseline.
Nick Hampton, Chief Executive of Tate & Lyle, highlighted the significance of this agreement: “This agreement represents a major step forward in delivering on our ambitious science-based climate targets, as well as a significant acceleration in the decarbonisation of our operations as we work towards becoming a net zero business. Through this agreement, we will be able to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of our ingredients and support our customers to achieve their decarbonisation goals.”
Anna Pierce, Director of Sustainability at Tate & Lyle, expressed the company’s enthusiasm for the partnership: “We are delighted to have partnered with Enel on this Power Purchase Agreement, and to support the development of additional renewable energy in North America. This agreement represents another milestone in the delivery of our sustainability strategy and is a clear demonstration of our commitment to care for our planet and its natural resources for the benefit of future generations.”
This agreement is a testament to Tate & Lyle’s commitment to sustainable practices and forms a key part of its broader sustainability program. This program encompasses various initiatives aimed at reducing energy consumption, promoting renewable electricity, and supporting sustainable agriculture. Tate & Lyle’s climate targets are aligned with a 1.5°C trajectory and have received approval from the Science Based Targets initiative.
Tate & Lyle’s commitment to climate action is evident in its continued pursuit of a more sustainable future. The company’s efforts to reduce its environmental footprint are not only beneficial to the planet but also support its customers’ decarbonization goals.
