Tavern at the Mission Debuts Contemporary Western-Inspired Ambiance in San Juan Capistrano

Nestled in the heart of San Juan Capistrano, across from the iconic Mission, Tavern at the Mission has unveiled a stunning transformation. Formerly known as Cedar Creek Inn, the establishment has undergone a meticulous renovation, resulting in a contemporary Western-inspired ambiance that seamlessly blends modern comfort with historic charm.

Step into the newly designed dining areas and be greeted by a warm and inviting atmosphere. Dark wood flooring complements cream- and gray-hued walls, reminiscent of the Mission’s serene color palette. Intricate black and gold leaf wall sconces illuminate the space, while a plastered fireplace adorned with a reclaimed-wood mantel adds a touch of rustic elegance. Smoked Italian-framed mirrors subtly reflect the historic surroundings, creating a sense of continuity.

Large 1940s-era circular brass and glass chandeliers lend a touch of vintage charm, while felt cowboy hats affixed to the walls and a steer horn above the fireplace mantle evoke the area’s rich equestrian heritage. Leather-and-gingham upholstered chairs provide comfortable seating, inviting guests to linger and savor the moment.

The adjoining Tumbleweed Bar, named after its four illuminated tumbleweed-like chandeliers created by Mojave Desert-based artist Jennifer Isbell, complements the Western theme with a black granite slabbed bar top and cozy round-back booth seats. Olive trees and topiaries scattered throughout the space add a touch of nature and tranquility.

“Redesigning Tavern at the Mission and the new Tumbleweed Bar was a labor of love for all of us,” said restauranteur David Wilhelm, who, along with partner Gregg Solomon, acquired the 25-year-old Cedar Creek Inn in June 2023. “Our primary goal was to create a community gathering spot, with a welcoming ambiance that reflected the rich history of San Juan Capistrano where guests can savor exceptional cuisine.”

Wilhelm, known for his successful Southern California restaurants such as French 75 and Jimmy’s Famous American Tavern, envisions Tavern at the Mission as more than just a place to dine or enjoy a cocktail. It is a destination where memories are made, stories are shared, and friendships are forged.

To celebrate its redesign, Tavern at the Mission will host a fundraiser for J.F Shea Therapeutic Riding Center on Thursday, May 16, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., featuring passed appetizers, wine, and specialty cocktails. Proceeds from the event will support the nonprofit’s mission to serve people with disabilities who benefit from therapeutic riding and horse-related activities.

Tavern at the Mission has remained open during the renovation and continues to offer a delectable menu, including three new additions: a Western Ranch Salad, Mediterranean Salad, and Cowboy Burger. With its exceptional cuisine, warm hospitality, and community-oriented events, Tavern at the Mission invites guests to experience a truly memorable dining experience in the heart of historic San Juan Capistrano.
