In a move that sent shockwaves through the political landscape, Taylor Swift, one of the world’s most beloved and influential pop stars, publicly endorsed Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris just hours after the US Presidential debate between Harris and former President Donald Trump. Taking to Instagram, Swift declared her support for Harris and her running mate, Tim Walz, for the 2024 Presidential Election.
Swift’s endorsement sparked a swift and critical response from Trump, who, during an appearance on Fox News, dismissed Swift’s support and even predicted potential repercussions for her career. He claimed that Swift’s endorsement was inevitable, stating, “It was just a question of time. She couldn’t possibly endorse Biden. You look at Biden, you couldn’t possibly endorse him.” Trump further added, “But she’s a very liberal person. She seems to always endorse a Democrat. And she’ll probably pay a price for it […] in the marketplace.”
However, Swift remained steadfast in her support, outlining her reasons for endorsing Harris in her Instagram post. She highlighted Harris’s advocacy for causes she deeply believes in, including LGBTQ+ rights, IVF, and reproductive rights, and praised her leadership style. Swift wrote, “I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them. I think she is a steady-handed, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos. I was so heartened and impressed by her selection of running mate @timwalz, who has been standing up for LGBTQ+ rights, IVF, and a woman’s right to her own body for decades.”
In addition to endorsing Harris, Swift also urged young voters to engage in the democratic process, emphasizing the importance of registering to vote and exploring early voting options. She wrote, “I’ve done my research, and I’ve made my choice. Your research is all yours to do, and the choice is yours to make. I also want to say, especially to first time voters: Remember that in order to vote, you have to be registered! I also find it’s much easier to vote early.
