The sun, shining brightly overhead, even prompted his models to hold umbrellas, a humorous contrast to the underground inspiration that fueled his designs.
Thompson, whose label 5000 is a finalist in the prestigious CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund, explained that his collection was inspired by Mabuhay Gardens, a legendary San Francisco bar that served as a breeding ground for punk rock bands like The Dead Kennedys and Black Flag. “It was our version of CBGB at the time,” he said, highlighting the raw energy and rebellious spirit that characterized the venue.
This year marks Thompson’s tenth anniversary in fashion, a milestone he celebrated with this debut presentation in New York. His collection, a celebration of his San Francisco roots, showcased a unique blend of structured tailoring and playful experimentation.
Thompson’s designs embraced a punk-inspired aesthetic, with makeup enhancing the rebellious, club kid vibe. The collection featured a mix of textures and fabrics, including iridescent organzas, crinkly taffetas, and camo jacquards, all expertly tailored into Thompson’s signature slim-fit, slightly boxy silhouettes.
Standout pieces included silver foil shorts with flared leg panels and a playful layering of athletic zip-ups under suits, pleated skirts over shorts, and strategically placed pins.
