TCL is making waves at IFA 2024 with a lineup of devices designed to prioritize eye health. The highlight of the show is the introduction of the TAB 11 Gen 2 tablet and the TCL 50 NXTPAPER series phones. These devices seamlessly blend affordability with sleek aesthetics and visual comfort thanks to TCL’s innovative NXTPAPER display technology.
The most striking feature, apart from the eye-catching camera design, is the paper-like NXTPAPER display. This technology delivers a reading experience that is gentle on the eyes while extending battery life significantly. The phones also feature a unique NXTPAPER Key that allows for an instant switch to an e-ink format, further reducing eye strain and making a single charge last up to a week – similar to the functionality of the Boox Palma, but within a complete smartphone package.
Both phones share impressive hardware specifications. They boast a 6.8-inch FHD+ screen with a 120Hz refresh rate, enhanced by the proprietary NXTPAPER technology implemented over 2.5D curved glass. Achieving a respectable peak brightness of 650 nits, the screen is further protected with a fingerprint-resistant coating. For those who enjoy taking notes or sketching, TCL offers a dedicated stylus, the T-Pen, for a more engaging user experience.
The TCL 50 NXTPAPER series phones are powered by MediaTek’s Dimensity 6300 processor, running Android 14 out of the box. While the phones will receive only two Android OS updates, they will be supported with the latest features until Android 16 arrives next year. These devices also come equipped with a substantial 5,010 mAh battery that supports 33W fast charging and is accompanied by a bundled charging brick with equivalent output.
In the camera department, both phones feature a 108-megapixel primary sensor, an 8MP ultrawide snapper, and a 2MP macro lens. The TCL 50 NXTPAPER model features an 8MP selfie camera, while the Pro version ups the ante with a 32MP sensor. Both phones are equipped with 8GB of RAM, but the storage capacity varies – the standard model offers 256GB, while the Pro version boasts 512GB. The expandable storage capabilities allow users to insert a microSD card with up to 2TB of additional space, while authentication is handled by a convenient side-mounted fingerprint sensor.
TCL isn’t just focusing on phones. The company is also expanding its tablet lineup with the TAB 11 Gen 2, which incorporates the NXTVISION display technology. This technology enhances clarity and color, delivering vibrant visuals perfect for multimedia enjoyment. While the tablet’s specs aren’t groundbreaking, they are suitable for its intended purpose. It features a 10.95-inch full-HD+ display powered by a 9,000mAh battery capable of delivering up to 13 hours of video playback and supports 18W charging. MediaTek’s Helio G80 processor handles the processing, assisted by 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage. TCL thoughtfully included a microSD card slot for up to 1TB of expandable storage and bundles an 18W charger. The tablet is equipped with a 5MP camera for selfies and video calls and an 8MP rear camera for capturing everyday moments.
TCL has announced a price of €199 for its latest NXTPAPER tablet, which will be available in Asia-Pacific, Latin America, and Europe. The TCL 50 Pro NXTPAPER is priced at €299, while the standard version will cost €229 in the European market. The company has yet to confirm availability in other regions, including the U.S. and Asia.
