In a deeply tragic incident, a government school teacher in Agra, India, succumbed to a cardiac arrest after receiving a terrifying phone call from cyber fraudsters. The fraudsters, posing as police officers, claimed her daughter was involved in a sex scandal and threatened to expose her unless the teacher paid a hefty sum of ₹1 lakh.
The victim, Malti Verma (58), was a dedicated teacher at a Junior High School in Achhnera, Agra. The harrowing incident unfolded on September 30th when she received a WhatsApp call at 12 pm. The callers, with their sinister intentions concealed behind fabricated identities, unleashed a torrent of threats and intimidation, leaving the teacher deeply distressed.
Deepanshu Rajput, Malti Verma’s son, recounted the horrifying ordeal to news agency PTI. He explained that his mother, after receiving the call, immediately contacted him, detailing the threats and the fabricated allegations against her daughter. However, upon examining the phone number, Deepanshu immediately recognized it as a ploy by cybercriminals.
He assured his mother that the call was a fraud and that his sister was safe and sound. Despite his efforts to calm her down, the stress and anxiety triggered by the incident proved too much for his mother to bear.
Sadly, after returning home from school, Malti Verma began experiencing severe chest pain and anxiety. Her condition deteriorated rapidly, prompting her family to rush her to the hospital. Sadly, doctors pronounced her dead due to cardiac arrest.
The Jagdishpura police station, upon receiving a complaint from the family, has initiated an investigation into the matter. The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting the growing menace of cybercrime and its devastating consequences.
In a statement, the Congress party expressed its deep concern over the incident, emphasizing the alarming increase in such cyberattacks and calling for urgent measures to address this growing threat. They highlighted that Malti Verma’s case is not an isolated incident but a grim reminder of the widespread vulnerability to cybercrime. The party urged authorities to take decisive action to combat these cyber criminals and protect innocent individuals from falling prey to their deceitful schemes.
