A swift click on a mobile phone by a woman techie, who was ambushed and molested by an unidentified man near a washroom on a moving train, played a crucial role in bringing the perpetrator to justice. The incident unfolded on a train traveling to Chennai during the night of August 25th and 26th. The victim, a software engineer, reported the assault to the Government Railway Police (GRP) on August 28th. The GRP, leveraging the power of social media, released a photo of the suspect on Twitter, appealing for information.
This public appeal proved instrumental in tracking down the assailant, identified as KV Kishore, a 25-year-old techie from Kumarapalayam. An anonymous tipster provided his name and workplace, allowing the GRP to locate and arrest him from a friend’s residence in Chennai.
The victim’s quick thinking and resourcefulness were crucial in the investigation. Immediately after the assault, she sought medical attention at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chennai, where she informed the staff about the incident. The hospital staff, recognizing the seriousness of the situation, alerted the Chennai Central railway police.
Following the complaint, the GRP, under the direction of Superintendent I Eswaran, meticulously tracked down Kishore, culminating in his arrest.
While the arrest brought a sense of relief, the police investigation took an unexpected turn. Authorities are now scrutinizing the victim’s statement, suspecting potential exaggeration in her account. They believe her lawyer friend may have encouraged her to embellish the details to expedite the police investigation.
The arrested suspect was remanded in judicial custody after being produced before a magistrate court on Friday.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by women in public spaces and highlights the importance of reporting such crimes promptly. The use of technology in this case, from the victim’s quick photo capture to the GRP’s social media appeal, demonstrates how technology can be a powerful tool in combating crime and ensuring justice.
