Tecno’s Phantom Ultimate 2: A Trifold Smartphone Concept That Redefines Foldable Design

Tecno’s Phantom Ultimate 2, a trifold smartphone concept, offers a tantalizing glimpse into the future of foldable devices. This innovative design surpasses traditional foldable phones like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6, which feature a single hinge and two panels. The Phantom Ultimate 2, on the other hand, boasts two hinges and three panels, enabling it to fold three times.

When folded, the Phantom Ultimate 2 boasts a compact 6.48-inch screen, all within an impressive 11mm thickness. This slim profile surpasses even the Honor Magic V3 folding phone, which sits at a little over 9mm. The device’s thinness is attributed to a specialized 0.25mm battery cover.

Unfolding the Phantom Ultimate 2 transforms it into a 10-inch tablet with a 4:3 aspect ratio. This surpasses the typical 7-inch screens seen in current foldable phones, making it a true full-size tablet. Tecno has ingeniously incorporated the double-hinge system, allowing the lowest panel to fold slightly when the device is in portrait mode, creating a stable stand for desk use. A virtual keyboard appears on the screen, cleverly transforming the device into a laptop-like experience.

Tecno emphasizes the robustness of its hinges, claiming they can withstand 300,000 folds with minimal crease formation on the unfolded screen. While twice the hinges mean twice the potential for creases, Tecno has implemented software magic to adapt the icons and user interface to the phone’s orientation. This adaptability allows for collaborative use, with two people utilizing separate sides of the screen, similar to features found on Samsung and Google devices.

While hardware specifications remain shrouded in mystery, the phone’s design reveals three cameras housed in a raised side section, reminiscent of the Huawei Mate XS. However, this camera placement might prevent the phone from lying flat on a desk.

The Phantom Ultimate 2 follows in the footsteps of the Phantom Ultimate rollable phone, both being concept devices. Tecno has not announced any production timelines for either, but the emergence of this trifold concept suggests that manufacturers are actively exploring this exciting frontier in foldable technology. Furthermore, Huawei has been hinting at its own trifold phone, with a full announcement expected this year, further fueling the anticipation for this new era of foldable devices.
