A horrific incident unfolded in broad daylight in Kanchanpur, North Tripura, where a 15-year-old Class IX girl was tragically killed by a 21-year-old college student. The incident occurred on Monday morning as the victim was walking to her private tuition around 8:30 am.
According to police reports, the accused, identified as Kartik Nath, a second-year student at Kanchanpur Government Degree College, had allegedly proposed to the young girl, but she rejected his advances. Fueled by rage and possibly a warped sense of entitlement, Nath blocked her path near Post Office Road and brutally stabbed her in the neck and chest.
Following the attack, Nath, in a desperate and self-destructive act, slit his own throat. The victim, bleeding profusely, collapsed on the ground. Emergency services rushed both individuals to the Kanchanpur sub-divisional hospital, where the girl was declared dead. Nath, despite being referred to Dharmanagar for further treatment, succumbed to his injuries.
The North Tripura SP, Bhanupada Chakraborty, confirmed that preliminary investigations point towards Nath’s proposal and the victim’s rejection as the motive behind this gruesome act. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by unchecked romantic obsession and the need for society to address the root causes of violence against women.
In a separate incident last week, Mumbai police arrested a 21-year-old man, Mohammed Zeeshan Mohammed, from Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, for molesting a 13-year-old girl. Zeeshan, an employee of a private bus agency, accosted the young girl while she was returning home from a grocery store.
The victim promptly informed her family about the incident, leading to the filing of a police report at the MHB police station. The investigation, led by Senior Police Inspector Sudhir Kudalkar, resulted in Zeeshan’s arrest.
These incidents underscore the ongoing struggle against violence and harassment of women and girls in India. It is critical for law enforcement to continue investigating such cases with urgency and for society to actively promote respect, consent, and healthy relationships.
