Teen Steals Mother’s Jewelry to Buy iPhone and Fund Girlfriend’s Birthday

A minor was apprehended by Delhi Police on Wednesday for allegedly stealing his mother’s gold jewelry. The motive? To buy an Apple iPhone and finance his girlfriend’s birthday party in Najafgarh, South West Delhi. The incident came to light when the minor’s mother filed a police report, claiming a house theft by an unknown person.

During the investigation, police identified the teenager, a Class 9 student, as the culprit. They discovered that he had sold his mother’s gold earring, gold ring, and gold chain to two different goldsmiths in the Kakrola area. The proceeds funded the purchase of an Apple iPhone for the girl, with whom he was allegedly in a relationship. The police arrested one of the goldsmiths, Kamal Verma (40 years), and recovered one gold ring and earring.

The investigation revealed that on August 3rd, a woman reported the theft of her gold jewelry, which had disappeared from her house on August 2nd between 8 am and 3 pm. CCTV footage from the crime scene showed no suspicious activity near the complainant’s house. The police searched the neighborhood for clues but found no witnesses to any suspicious activity during the reported time frame.

Suspecting the involvement of family members, the police noticed the minor son of the woman had been missing since the crime. Gathering information, they questioned his school friends and discovered he had purchased a new iPhone worth ₹ 50,000.

Raids were conducted at the boy’s hideouts in Dharampura, Kakrola, and Najafgarh, but he managed to evade capture. On Tuesday, a tipoff led the police to lay a trap near the boy’s house. He was apprehended, and an Apple iPhone was recovered from his possession.

Initially, the boy denied any involvement in the theft. However, he later confessed to selling the stolen gold to two goldsmiths. The boy stated he was a Class 9 student studying at a private school in Najafgarh. He revealed that his father had passed away due to illness and that he had no interest in his studies, scoring average marks.

The police revealed that the boy, seeking to impress his girlfriend on her birthday, had asked his mother for money. However, his mother refused, advising him to focus on his studies. Angered by the denial, he decided to steal money from his home.
