A tragic incident occurred in Central Delhi on Saturday, claiming the life of an 18-year-old boy, identified as Jitesh. The young man died after the outdoor unit of an air conditioner fell on him from the second floor of a building. The incident, which took place near Desh Bandhu Gupta police station limits, was captured on CCTV footage and has since gone viral on social media.
The video shows Jitesh and his friend, Pranshu (17), sitting on a scooter. Just before Jitesh was about to leave, the AC unit came crashing down, injuring both boys. Jitesh was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival. Pranshu, who sustained injuries in the incident, is currently undergoing treatment and is unable to give a statement to the police.
Following the incident, Delhi Police lodged an FIR under sections 125(a) and 106 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which pertain to endangering life and causing death by negligence respectively. A forensic team has been deployed to examine the scene, and further investigations are underway to determine the cause of the AC unit’s failure.
This incident comes just days after two young girls, aged two and six, fell into a pot containing hot vegetables at a ‘bhandara’ (community feast) in Faridabad. One of the girls tragically died, while the other suffered serious injuries. Police attributed the incident to the girls slipping and falling into the pot while playing in the bhandara’s kitchen.
Earlier this month, a similar freak accident occurred in Mumbra, Maharashtra, where a four-year-old girl died after a dog fell on her from the fifth floor of a building. These recent incidents highlight the importance of maintaining infrastructure and ensuring the safety of individuals, particularly children, in public spaces.
