Teenager Drowns in Delhi Waterlogging Incident Amid Heavy Rains

A tragic incident occurred on Friday in Delhi’s Chanakyapuri area, where a 15-year-old boy lost his life after drowning in a waterlogged street. The incident happened during heavy rainfall, highlighting the dangers associated with waterlogging in the city during monsoon season.

The boy, identified as Sourabh, resided with his family in the Vivekanand Camp, located in the same area. According to Delhi Police, Sourabh and some friends were playing in the rain near the British School when he accidentally ventured into deep water and drowned. The fast-flowing water made it difficult for him to escape the perilous situation.

Sourabh’s friends immediately informed his family about the incident. His family rushed to the spot, pulled him out of the water, and transported him to the hospital. Sadly, he was declared dead on arrival.

The body of the deceased has been sent for a postmortem examination, and the Delhi Police are conducting further investigations into the incident.

This incident comes amidst a series of similar incidents in Delhi where people have drowned or fallen into open drains during the monsoon season. On June 31st, a woman and a child reportedly drowned in a drain in the Mayur Vihar Phase 3 area of East Delhi.

On August 22nd, the Delhi High Court expressed its displeasure with the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) over the death of a mother-son duo who fell into a waterlogged open drain the previous month. The court criticized the DDA for failing to supervise the work done by the contractor, who allegedly left parts of the drain uncovered. The court directed the DDA to seek instructions on compensation for the victims’ family before the next hearing on September 5th.

The recent tragedies highlight the need for improved infrastructure and safety measures in Delhi to mitigate the risks associated with waterlogging during monsoon season. Authorities are urged to take swift and decisive action to prevent such unfortunate incidents from occurring in the future.
