Teenager Killed by Train on Graduation Day in Northwest Calgary

On Tuesday afternoon, a joyful graduation day turned into a day of mourning for the family and friends of a 17-year-old who was struck and killed by a train in northwest Calgary. The incident occurred on a set of train tracks east of 85th Street Northwest near a bridge in the community of Bowness. According to the Calgary Police Service, the victim was part of a group of teenagers celebrating their upcoming high school graduation when the tragedy occurred. Witnesses reported that the victim and two other friends had broken away from the group and attempted to cross the bridge, despite warnings from their companions that a train was approaching. Sadly, one of the teens, identified only as Sunny, witnessed the horrific event unfold as the victim’s foot became caught on the tracks, causing him to fall and be struck by the oncoming train. Area residents, including John Murray and Sarah Gill, expressed concerns about the frequent occurrence of people jumping off the bridge for recreational purposes, despite the presence of locked fences and signs installed by rail company CPKS to deter such behavior. They emphasized that the incident serves as a tragic reminder of the dangers of engaging in risky behavior near train tracks, especially during graduation season when teenagers are known to gather in these areas. The community is now questioning whether additional safety measures are necessary to prevent future tragedies.
