Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao has taken a strong stance against lake encroachments, vowing to crack down on those who violate environmental regulations, regardless of their influence. This declaration came after the demolition of N-Convention, a convention center co-owned by actor Nagarjuna, located in Hyderabad. The structure was built on encroached land near the Tammidikunta lake, in violation of building permissions and environmental regulations.
Speaking at a function organized by the Hare Krishna Movement, Rao emphasized his commitment to protecting the lakes and following the teachings of Lord Krishna. He stated that the government has established the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HYDRAA) to specifically address the issue of lake protection and prevent further encroachment. He further highlighted the importance of liberating these lakes from encroachers for the benefit of the people.
The demolition of N-Convention serves as a stark reminder of the government’s zero-tolerance policy towards encroachments. The Chief Minister declared that his government will not back down in its efforts to protect the lakes, even in the face of pressure from influential individuals. He further emphasized the cultural and economic significance of lakes, stating that they are crucial for the livelihoods of many people and serve as vital sources of drinking water.
Rao expressed concern over the pollution caused by farmhouses built near the lakes, highlighting the release of sewage into water bodies like Gandipet, which supplies drinking water to parts of Hyderabad. He concluded by stating that he would not be a true representative of the people if he failed to protect the lakes and the interests of the people who depend on them. This decisive action against lake encroachments underscores the government’s commitment to environmental protection and sustainable development in Telangana.
