Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag’s future is in doubt after a disappointing season at Old Trafford.
BBC reporter Phil McNulty has discussed ten Hag’s future, suggesting that former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso’s strong ties to the Merseyside club could prevent him from taking the United job.
Ten Hag’s side won the Carabao Cup last term, but they are unlikely to qualify for the Champions League this season.
McNulty believes that ten Hag’s future is in doubt, especially after United’s disappointing performance in the FA Cup semi-final.
However, ten Hag could still save his job if United’s new leadership feels he has been held back by the club’s poor structure.
McNulty also answered a question about whether United could look to prise Alonso away from Bayer Leverkusen next summer, but he believes that would be unlikely due to Alonso’s ties to Liverpool.
Other potential candidates for the United job include Thomas Tuchel, who will be leaving Chelsea at the end of the season, and Mauricio Pochettino, who is currently out of work after being sacked by Paris Saint-Germain.
