The weekend box office saw a shocking upset as the indie horror sequel ‘Terrifier 3’ claimed the top spot, ousting ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ from its brief reign. ‘Terrifier 3’, featuring the gruesome antics of Art the Clown, surpassed all expectations, earning a remarkable $18.3 million, exceeding the lifetime gross of its predecessor, ‘Terrifier 2’.
The ‘Joker’ sequel experienced a dramatic decline, falling a staggering 81% from its disappointing opening weekend to just $7.55 million. This catastrophic drop puts the film on a trajectory towards significant financial losses for Warner Bros. ‘The Wild Robot’ from DreamWorks Animation landed in second place with $13.45 million, pushing its domestic total to $83.7 million.
Meanwhile, ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ continues its blockbuster run, adding another $7.05 million to its impressive total of $275.6 million. This might offer some solace for Warner Bros. amidst the ‘Joker 2’ debacle.
Other new releases, like the Pharrell Williams Lego-biopic ‘Piece by Piece’ and ‘Transformers: One’, failed to garner much traction, with opening weekend earnings of $3.8 million and $3.65 million respectively.
The weekend also saw the wide release of the ‘Saturday Night Live’ origin story ‘Saturday Night’, earning $3.4 million in its third weekend.
Outside of the top 10, Marvel’s ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ concluded its successful run, grossing $635.2 million domestically and $1.333 billion worldwide, setting records for R-rated films.
Looking ahead, only two more comic book-related movies are scheduled for release in 2024: ‘Venom: The Last Dance’ and ‘Kraven the Hunter’, but only ‘Venom: The Last Dance’ is expected to achieve box office success.
