Terror Threat Looms Over India’s Independence Day Celebrations

Intelligence agencies in India are on high alert, with reports suggesting a possible fidayeen attack by terrorists in Delhi or Punjab around Independence Day. While the specific date of the attack may not be August 15th due to heightened security, authorities are concerned about a potential strike a day or two later.

Intelligence sources have indicated the movement of two unidentified individuals carrying weaponry near the border of Kathua in Jammu and Kashmir, raising concerns about a possible advance towards Pathankot. Additionally, a consignment of explosives, potentially intended for targeting security establishments, camps, vehicles, or critical installations, was reportedly delivered to a remote area of Jammu city on June 1st.

The intelligence alert specifically mentions the possibility of deceptively fabricated improvised explosive devices (IEDs) being used to target large gatherings around August 15th. The threat is further compounded by the possibility of reprisal actions by groups feeling disgruntled by government decisions or policies.

In response to the heightened threat, the Delhi Police have implemented stringent security measures for Independence Day celebrations. Over 3,000 traffic officers, more than 10,000 police personnel, and 700 AI-based facial recognition cameras have been deployed across the national capital. Additional police teams and paramilitary forces are stationed at strategic locations, including Indira Gandhi International Airport, railway stations, bus stands, malls, and markets.

Following the recent assassination attempt on former US President Donald Trump, the critical role of snipers in security protocols has been emphasized. During a security meeting at the Red Fort, Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora highlighted the need for enhanced security measures, drawing parallels to the Trump attack. The area around the Red Fort will be declared a “no kite flying zone” until the event concludes, with personnel tasked with intercepting any kites.

To further enhance security, the Delhi Police have prohibited the use of sub-conventional aerial platforms such as paragliders, hang-gliders, and hot air balloons from August 2nd to 16th. The government’s vision for India’s future is highlighted by this year’s Independence Day theme, “Viksit Bharat,” which signifies the goal of transforming India into a developed nation by 2047.
