A wave of violence swept through Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday, leaving two laborers dead and two others injured in a terrorist attack. The incident, which occurred in the Ganderbal district, targeted a construction camp housing the laborers, who were employed by a private firm working on a tunnel project. The terrorists, firing indiscriminately, killed the two laborers on the spot, highlighting the brutal nature of the attack.
Following the attack, police and army personnel immediately cordoned off the area to track down the assailants. The incident has once again brought to the forefront the persistent security challenges facing Jammu and Kashmir.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah condemned the attack, describing it as a “cowardly attack on non-local labourers.” In a post on X, Abdullah expressed his sorrow and condemned the attack, emphasizing the importance of the infrastructure project the laborers were working on. He also extended his condolences to the families of the deceased.
The attack comes on the heels of a separate encounter between security forces and terrorists along the Line of Control (LOC) in Baramulla district. According to the Indian Army, a joint anti-infiltration operation was launched based on intelligence inputs about a potential infiltration attempt. The operation resulted in an exchange of fire after troops spotted suspicious activity. The encounter is ongoing.
Adding to the unsettling security situation, the Jammu and Kashmir Police on Saturday arrested two terrorists in the Poonch district. These arrests are significant, as they have been linked to multiple grenade attack cases, including attacks on Gurudwaras, temples, hospitals, and army bases.
The recent string of incidents underscores the complex security landscape in Jammu and Kashmir, demanding a multi-pronged approach to address the challenges posed by terrorism and maintain peace in the region. Authorities are actively working to investigate the attacks, apprehend the perpetrators, and ensure the safety of residents and workers in the region.
